Heilige Aarde
Group exhibition
Curated by Lola van der Made
Synagogue Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands
Heilige Aarde explored how different cultures and religions have shaped our relationship with nature throughout history. Set within the historic Synagogue of Groningen, the exhibition invited visitors to reflect on where the sacred can be found today; not only in religious traditions, but also in the landscapes, communities, and everyday places that give meaning to our lives.
Saints of San Lorenzo
Oil on canvas, 100 × 100 cm, 2025
Created for this exhibition, Saints of San Lorenzo brings together religious symbolism, Dutch decorative painting traditions, and the urban landscape of Rome. The portrait subtly references Christian iconography while placing it within a contemporary context. By combining Hindeloopen-inspired floral patterns with the textures of the San Lorenzo neighbourhood, the work reflects on how ideas of the sacred are shaped through culture, memory, and lived experience, inviting viewers to consider the meeting point between spirituality and everyday life.
